What Direction Is Your Life Going? – Andy Gamble

This powerful message takes us deep into Genesis chapters 18 and 19, exploring the contrasting journeys of two imperfect men – Abraham and Lot. Both were blessed, both were called out of their old lives into God’s promise, yet they ended up in vastly different places. The central question we’re challenged to ask ourselves is profound: What direction is the invisible arrow of our life moving? Are we drawing closer to God, or are we slowly drifting away? The beauty of this teaching is that it’s not about perfection – it’s about direction. Abraham, despite his fears, lies, and doubts, kept drawing near to God. Lot, though described as righteous, gradually compromised. He looked toward Sodom, pitched his tent near it, lived in it, and eventually couldn’t leave it. This progression reveals a sobering truth: drift happens subtly and slowly, one compromise at a time. No one wakes up intending to destroy their life or lose their passion for God – it happens quietly, through small decisions that accumulate over time. The message reminds us that our lives move in the direction of our strongest influence, urging us to pay attention to what’s shaping our hearts. Are we being discipled by comfort, fear, success, or entertainment – or by intimacy with Jesus? The grace woven throughout this narrative is stunning: even when Lot lingered and hesitated, the angels literally took him by the hand because God was merciful. This is our hope too – God rescues us from messes we’ve walked ourselves into, though grace doesn’t always erase consequences. The invitation today is simple yet transformative: draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
